Find Used Isuzu's in Utah
Isuzu means "50 bells," and it is the
name of a river that flows through a province dotted
with ancient Shinto shrines in Japan. The company's
roots are in Tokyo and started in 1916. The Tokyo
Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company
decided to broaden its business to include
automobile manufacturing. They found a union with
the U.K.-based Wolseley Motor Company, and rolled
out the A9 car and the first truck, the CP. The
Isuzu name came about in 1949. After the war, Isuzu
trucks were highly successful. In 1959, it produced
the world's first two-ton light-duty forward-control
truck. The passenger car line was expanded with the
Florian, the Bellett and the 117 Coupe, as well as
trucks like the WASP. Isuzu joined a partnership
with General Motors in 1971, and by the 1980’s the
vehicles were introduced to America. The Pup was the
first Isuzu sold in the U.S. market. The Trooper,
possibly Isuzu’s most well known vehicle, was
introduced in 1983. It was an SUV, two or four door,
and quickly became popular in the SUV category. A
joint venture with Subaru in 1987, led to the
production of the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Pickup.
Over the years, the Trooper became more refined,
more luxurious, and larger. It contributed to
Isuzu’s strong sales in the 1990’s. It was also
responsible for popularizing the SUV in America. In
1999, GM became the role of majority shareholder to
Isuzu. Sales dropped in the last ten years, as the
SUV market expanded with a huge increase in makes
and models. The Rodeo and the Axiom (a crossover
SUV) were dropped from the lineup in 2004.
Currently, Isuzu's lineup comprises just two
vehicles — a truck and an SUV, both of which are
based on GM products.
Utah Used Isuzu Cars
With its headquarters in Tokyo,
Japan, Isuzu's range includes small to medium
compact automobiles, and medium to large duty
commercial trucks and SUVs. But for the most part,
in this country, all a used car buyer would find are
their SUVs and pick up trucks. It has been years
since Isuzu last rolled out a car in the U.S. Isuzu
has seen its share of hard times in the recent
years; a lack of funding for both new product
investment and marketing has forced the company to
rely heavily on its partnership with GM. Thus,
making the current Isuzus based mainly on GM
products.
The original Isuzu Trooper came about during the
early 1980s. The Trooper was fairly successful,
despite its plain and utilitarian looks, so there
are plenty of these used SUVs around. It has a boxy,
two-door body, however older versions are fairly
underpowered, with only a 2.2-liter four-cylinder
engine. There are also four door Troopers available
in the used car market, and a V6 engine. The 2002
Trooper has much more luxury to it than its
predecessors. Isuzu's full-time Torque-On-Demand
(TOD) system comes on all 4WD Troopers with
automatic transmissions. It has unique rear cargo
doors, with a large left-side door that carries the
spare tire and a smaller right-side door. The
Trooper is quiet even on the highway, it offers a
high quality diving experience and plenty of space
inside. The real bargain is the Trooper Limited
trim, which came about in the 1995 model year, and
was renamed the Luxury model in 1997. These used
SUVs have a power sunroof, leather upholstery,
heated seats and wood grain trim. All at an
affordable price, only a few hundred dollars more
than the base model.
