Used Cars: Important Steps
We all know that buying a used car
and taking risks come as a package deal. Some except
this for what it is, and hold their breath. Yet
there are many ways you can give yourself added
securities in your used car buying process.
The ‘Deal’:
Don’t let yourself get to wide-eyed about amazing
‘deals’ that are offered to you for a used car.
Sellers have been offering a variety of attractive
sales incentives such as 0% financing. These can
save you money, but just because you can get a good
discount doesn't mean you should buy the vehicle. It
is more important to make sure it is the right one
that will make you happy (possibly for years to
come). Research any used car you're considering,
including the reliability rating. Despite an
attractive discount, a vehicle without trusty
reliability is not that much of a bargain. Also,
even if there are incentives involved with the used
car, still negotiate.
Test Drive: This is
one you do not want to skip. It is one of the most
important parts of the used car buying process.
Don’t let a shiny vehicle with top ranking specs
fool you. A surer way to know the true condition of
the used car is to give it a very thorough test
drive. Skipping this is a mistake, and presents a
good chance for post-buying regret.
Professional Mechanic:
Although you must inspect the used car before the
purchase for anything obvious, an independent
professional mechanic will find things that you
won’t. A thorough diagnosis should cost around
$100, but is well worth it. A good mechanic should
be able to tell if the car has been in a major
accident or has a hidden but costly problem, and
they should have diagnostic computers to help out.
If a seller refuses to let you take the used car to
a mechanic, then do not buy the vehicle.
Monthly Payment:
Salespeople will focus on a monthly-payment figure
while negotiating a deal. Don't fall for this trick
when negotiating the used car. Using the monthly
payment as the focus, the salesperson can lump the
new-vehicle price, trade-in value, and financing or
leasing terms together, giving them too much
latitude to give you a "good price" in one area
while making up for it in another. Insist on
negotiating things one at a time, and focus on the
overall price, instead of anything ‘monthly’.
