South Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 29,437 at the 2000 census, and South Jordan has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Utah since the early 1990s. The city has a total area of 21.0 square miles, of which 0.76% is water. The elevation of South Jordan ranges from approximately 4,300 feet near the Jordan River in the east to about 5,200 ft in the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains. The first people in the area lived around the edges of Lake Bonneville about 9000 years ago. They were wandering hunter-gatherers who moved through the region staying in caves and rock shelters. In the 1890s new crops were introduced which changed farming in South Jordan. Alfalfa hay took the place of the tougher native grasses. The first city-wide sewer system was built in 1974. Modern day South Jordan is located in the southwestern portion of the Salt Lake Valley. The city lies between the Oquirrh Mountains, West Jordan, the Jordan River, and Sandy. Rapid residential development in South Jordan and the south side of the valley has spurred economic development in the city.
